My Meth Story

My name is Chris and I am from Sacramento, CA. I was born in 1969 and I started using meth when I was 16 years old. As I got older my addiction grew worse, sometimes I would stay up for 8 - 10 days in a row, then I would eat and sleep for 2 days and do it all over again. Now, imagine your 3 yr old son or daughter being dragged away by CPS, kicking and screaming and crying for you to take them back home with you. Your newborn son or daughter not being able to come home from the hospital with you. Your 15 yr old daughter or son not wanting to live with you. Your ex spouse not wanting your son or daughter to visit with you. That was my life 3 yrs ago, my "rock bottom".

I hated CPS at that time, when I should have hated myself! I was court ordered to participate in and graduate the Dependency Drug Court (DDC) in order to get my kids back. To graduate a client must complete the following for 90 - 180 consecutive days:

* Drug test negative 2-3 times weekly (random tests are employed);

* Attend all treatment groups or individual sessions required;

* Attend all scheduled meetings with their STARS Recovery Specialists;

* Attend three or more support group or 12-step meetings weekly;

* Attend all required DDC appearances; and

* Complete all requirements of the Court.

After enrolling into drug court and getting a recovery specialist (Lucas A), I was on my road to recovery, a long, narrow, winding, uphill road. I was referred to a 6 month out-patient substance abuse treatment program in Sacramento (MAAP). After the first month I could not believe how smooth everything was going, I actually enjoyed going to the treatment program, even looked forward to it. And before I knew it, I had finished everything successfully without any problems. It helps when you like the Judge, your recovery specialist, and your counselors. Because they have been where I was, so they understood me better. I can honestly say that I am now glad that CPS came into my life and saved me!

Exactly one year after being clean, I suffered a heart-attack and had surgery. Having heart problems at the young age of 37 is enough to scare anyone straight! I am happy to say that I have been clean now since Feb 2006.
